Prof. Mary Boatemaa Setrana, IDRC Research Chair on Forced Displacement in Anglophone West Africa, spoke as a Guest Speaker at a two-day workshop organised by the Centre of Excellence in Migration and Global Studies (CEMGS) of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN).

The workshop, held from 14–15 October 2025 at the NOUN Headquarters in Abuja, focused on strengthening and maximising academic presence in the migration space in Nigeria. Prof. Setrana was invited in recognition of her expertise in migration and forced displacement research and she shared insights from the Ghanaian experience on how academic research can more effectively inform migration governance and policy development.

Her contribution emphasised the importance of evidence-based scholarship, interdisciplinary collaboration, and sustained engagement between universities, policymakers, and civil society actors in responding to contemporary migration challenges across Africa.

The workshop brought together academics, policymakers, and practitioners to reflect on the role of higher education institutions in shaping migration debates and strengthening research-led policy interventions.

Speaking at the opening of the workshop, the Vice-Chancellor of NOUN, Prof. Olufemi Peters, called for greater academic involvement in shaping Nigeria’s migration policy for national development and global engagement. He made the call during the opening session organised by CEMGS in collaboration with the Civil Society National Network on Migration and Development, underscoring the need to strengthen linkages between research, policy and practice.
