The IDRC Research Chair on Forced Displacement in Anglophone West Africa, together with its partners and in collaboration with the Merian Institute for Advanced Studies in Africa (MIASA) at the University of Ghana, is organising an international conference in Senegal in March 2026 focused on emerging and complex forms of forced displacement across Africa.

The three-day conference, scheduled for 26–28 March 2026, will be hosted at LASPAD in St. Louis. It will provide a platform for empirically rich and theoretically grounded papers examining evolving displacement dynamics, their drivers, and their implications for affected populations and host communities.

The conference seeks multidisciplinary perspectives on displacement processes, actors, governance frameworks and durable solutions. Particular attention will be given to social change in the Sahel and beyond, recognising the region’s central role in contemporary displacement patterns shaped by conflict, climate stress, political transitions, and economic uncertainty.

Speaking on the importance of the conference, the Chairholder, Prof. Mary B. Setrana, noted that the initiative aims to deepen scholarly understanding of how forced displacement is being reshaped across Africa and to strengthen dialogue between research, policy, and practice.

The convening of scholars from diverse disciplinary and regional backgrounds at the conference is expected to advance critical debates on forced displacement in Africa, contribute to policy-relevant knowledge and reinforce collaborative research networks across the continent.
